About WASP
How the Name WASP Was Born
Our journey of helping others began when I was just five years old. Acts of service were simply a part of our daily life, and over the years that passion grew into what would eventually become our WASP Npo.
When it came time to officially register our organisation, we needed a name—something meaningful, something that reflected who we are and what we stand for. The credit for that name goes entirely to our Lifetime Honorary Member, Mrs Asma Pillay.
Back then, most Saturdays were spent helping single and widowed parents in our community with whatever chores or tasks needed attention. It became a routine of love and service, and something I looked forward to each week.
One afternoon, as I was walking home for lunch, Mrs Pillay called out, “Wasp! Wasp!” I immediately looked around, thinking a real wasp was buzzing behind me. Confused, I turned back to her—and she smiled.
“As of today,” she said, “you are WASP… Widowed And Single Parents.”
That moment gave birth to the name that still defines us today. It wasn’t chosen in a boardroom. It was born from genuine care, community spirit, and a simple act of recognition from someone who saw the heart behind the work.
And so, WASP Npo was named—not by chance, but by love, purpose, and the people we serve.
